Always Leave Them Working

There’s a stage tradition of stopping before the final applause: “Always leave them wanting.”

I think of this with my painting. I used to paint until the image seemed balanced, as if there was nothing more to add. But now I find myself being stopped before then. The painting is balanced, yes – but no, it isn’t. There’s something more that could be added – that’s asking to be added – right at that place. But I am “told” to leave it.

To leave it for the viewer to complete. His eyes, his heart, will be directed to that yearning place (everyone to the same, I’ve found) and then it is he, his spirit, that completes it. He becomes an active partner in the creativity. And being active, his Life Energy is more actuated.

Hence my motto: “Always leave them working.”
